Does Belgian insurance
cover osteopathy?

A plain-English guide to reimbursement — for expats, EU staff, and Belgian residents.

1. The basics: how Belgian healthcare works

Belgium has a two-tier healthcare system. The first tier is the compulsory state health insurance (INAMI/RIZIV), administered through a mutualité (French) or ziekenfonds (Dutch). The second tier is optional private complementary insurance, offered by the same mutualités or by private insurers.

Osteopathy is not currently reimbursed by the mandatory INAMI/RIZIV system. However, many complementary insurance plans do offer partial reimbursement — and the rules vary significantly between providers.

The short answer: Your base state insurance won't cover it, but your complementary plan probably does — typically €20–€40 per session, up to a yearly maximum.

2. Mutualité / Ziekenfonds complementary plans

Most mutualités offer a "complementary" plan that partially reimburses non-conventional medicine including osteopathy. The figures below are for 2026 and apply when the osteopath is recognised by the mutuality and you are enrolled in the complementary plan.

MutualitéPer sessionAnnual capMax sessions / year
Mutualité Chrétienne (CM / MC)€15 Partial€755 (combinable with acupuncture, chiropraxie, homéopathie)
Solidaris (Mutualité Socialiste)€10 Partial€606
Partenamut (Mutualité Libre)€10 Partial€12012 (all alternative therapies combined)
Helan (Mutualité Libre flamande)€12 Partial€726
Mutualia (Mutualité Neutre)€10 Partial€12012
⚠️ 2026 framework change: Since the Loi Colla on alternative therapies was repealed, mutualities now require that your osteopath be either INAMI-recognised or a member of a recognised professional federation (UPOB-BVBO, GNRPO). Neil meets both criteria. Always verify your specific plan tier with your mutualité before your appointment — figures above are for the standard complementary plans.

3. Private insurers (DKV, AXA, AG, Belfius…)

Many expats and professionals in Brussels have private complementary health insurance in addition to or instead of a mutualité. Coverage for osteopathy is common but depends entirely on your specific plan.

InsurerTypically covered?Notes
DKV BelgiumUsually yesMost DKV hospitalisation and ambulatory plans include osteopathy. Check "paramedical" or "alternative medicine" section of your contract.
AXA BelgiumPlan-dependentCovered under many AXA Health plans. Check your certificate of coverage or call AXA directly.
AG InsurancePlan-dependentSome AG complementary plans cover "non-conventional medicine". Verify with your HR or directly with AG.
Belfius InsurancePlan-dependentCoverage varies. Check your policy under "paramédical" or "médecines alternatives".
Baloise / EthiasPlan-dependentContact your insurer directly with the NACE/activity code for osteopathy.

4. EU institutions staff (JSIS — Joint Sickness Insurance Scheme)

Staff of the European institutions — European Commission, European Parliament, Council, EEAS, EU agencies and their dependants — are covered by the JSIS, not by a Belgian mutualité. Many of our patients work in or near the EU quarter, so the process is one we run on a daily basis.

JSIS process at a glance:
  • You'll need a doctor's prescription ("traitement d'ostéopathie / ostéopathie 5 séances", typically) before the first session for the costs to be reimbursable.
  • JSIS reimburses osteopathy under "non-scheduled benefits / alternative medicine". Rates are typically 80–85% of costs, capped at a per-session ceiling that varies by year.
  • Submit the attestation Neil provides, your prescription, and the receipt to PMO via the JSIS Online portal.
  • If your prescription runs out (e.g. after 5 sessions), ask your GP for a renewal before booking the next series.

Neil provides a Belgian-format attestation de soins that is compatible with JSIS claims and matches the format the PMO expects. Specific reimbursement rates change each year — check the current PMO General Implementing Provisions or your HR contact for the latest ceiling.

5. How to claim — step by step

1
Before your appointment: Call your mutualité or insurer and confirm that osteopathy is covered under your specific plan. Ask for the maximum reimbursement per session and the annual limit.
2
At your appointment: Pay €70 for the session. Neil will provide you with an official attestation de soins (proof of treatment) immediately after your visit.
3
Submit the claim: Send or scan the attestation to your mutualité or insurer. Most now accept digital submissions via their app or online portal.
4
Receive reimbursement: Typically within 2–4 weeks, the covered amount is paid directly to your bank account.

6. The attestation Neil provides

After every appointment, Neil provides an official attestation de soins d'ostéopathie (proof of osteopathic treatment). This document includes:

This is the standard document accepted by all Belgian mutualités and most private insurers. If your insurer requires a specific format, let Neil know before or at your appointment.
